miss ene eats: Tunglok Xihe Peking Duck

I had a $100 voucher for Tung Lok to be used at any of their restaurants. Decided to check out the Tunglok Xihe Peking Duck restaurant at Turf City because our family loves Peking duck. Turf City is a little hard to get to for the boy on weekdays so thanks to Google, I realised that they have another branch at Orchard Central. I haven’t been to Orchard Central – or OC for a while since I got a splitting headache trying to navigate their horrible horrible carpark. Thankfully, they now offer valet service so you simply drop off your car at street level and only need to manoeuvre the terrible parking lot on your way down.

I made a table reservation and at the same time, placed an order for the Peking duck. As it turns out, without a pre-order, you’d have to wait up to 50 minutes (!) for it to be prepared.

We were first presented with the “starter” slices (extreme left of picture) where you dip the superbly fragrant and juicy skin into blackberry sauce (interesting!), followed by a quick dab into a bowl of sugar and some “popping” candy. It reminded me of the “popping candy” we used to eat as kids. It creates a popping effect in your mouth as you munch down on the duck skin. It was my favourite bit of the duck. So so good but oh man, so damn sinful.

You don’t get much of the skin unlike the usual type of Peking duck I’m used to. I actually prefer the kind where you only get the skin and wrap it up with egg rolls together with cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce.

Each duck costs $78++ but they currently have a 50% off promotion on Mondays. Good to check it out if you’re in the area and want some Peking duck!
