One of our favourite go-to places for a weekend brunch/lunch is the hawker centre at Blk 628 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. It is located right across Yio Chu Kang Community Club. Our standard weekend fare was 2 plates of wanton mee, a plate of chai tow kway (black), one glass of soya bean milk (for me) and a cup of kopi for the boy. Deciding that we’ve had enough of wanton mee (and thanks to foursquare which had rave reviews), we decided to give Joo Heng Mushroom Minced Pork Mee a try. There was a LONG queue but hey, how long can it take, right?
Well, pretty darn long! It took a good HALF hour before we each got our bowl of bak chor mee. The boy told me that everyone else ahead of him in the queue was buying 7-10 packets each. No wonder it took forever!
So what’s the verdict?
The noodles were cooked to the right consistency with the right ‘bounce’ and in case you’re wondering, the bowl above (mine) had an extra dollar of ingredients. As you can see, they were pretty generous. Special mention goes to the braised mushrooms. I’m not a fan of
fungus mushrooms but this was delightfully flavourful and had the right texture. Yummy! To make it even better, a generous amount of black vinegar might have done the trick.
I wouldn’t mind eating it again if I’m in the area but to queue for half hour? No thank you. I’d stick to my all-time favourite bak chor mee stall.
